Puja room in a house is a place for seeking divine blessings of Almighty God for health, wealth, and joy for the family. Keeping this in mind, North-East corner of the house which is being ruled by planet Jupiter has been assigned for Puja room according to Vastu Shastra. In order of preference, North and East directions are also preferred directions for doing Puja.
Puja room located elsewhere can be considered as a defect and suitable corrective or remedial measures should be taken to remove those defects. Although the cumulative effects of other defects also play a significant role in giving bad effects for the family as a whole, however any defect in Puja room is a serious defect causing inauspicious results. Any defect in Puja room corresponds to a bad conjunction of Jupiter and the Jupiter related effects can be felt by the occupants.

In order to reap the maximum benefits of worship one should follow certain Vaastu principles with regard to Puja room: —-
- Puja room should be kept neat and clean, tidy and illuminated with lights either naturally or artificially all the time and never allow cobwebs to grow inside Puja room as it creates negative aura.
- There should not be any defective or fused electric bulb in Puja room and electrical apparatuses should be kept in working conditions.
- Colour of puja room should be painted either in light Yellow, Golden Yellow, White or Pista Green but never in any dark colour such as Black, Brown, Navy Blue, Purple as these colors are not friendly colors of planet Jupiter, ruling planet of North-East corner.
- Water tap in Puja room should be located in North of North-East or East of North-East side of Puja room.
- No torn or damaged picture of God and Goddess should be placed in Puja room as it will bring inauspicious results for everyone in the family.
- People generally keep the pictures of their deceased family members together with the pictures of God at the same place in Puja room .This is a serious defect in Vastu Shastra as their place in the house is on the Southern wall of South-West. So never worship God and ancestors at the same place.
Faces of deity
- Picture of Lord Shiva’s family should be placed on the Northern direction.
- Picture of Lord Ram and His court should be placed on the Eastern wall; similarly any incarnation of Lord Vishnu should be placed on the Eastern wall.
- Picture of Hanuman should be placed in the North-East corner facing South-West direction.
- Picture of Lord Ganesha or Lord Kartikeya is preferred on the Southern wall facing His parents.
- Pictures of Goddess Durga, Laxmi and Kali should be kept on the Northern wall, these all are the symbols of Shakti whereas the picture of Goddess Saraswati should be placed on the Eastern wall as she is the Goddess of knowledge and wisdom.
- Shiv Linga should be kept in such a way that the offered water should flow towards North direction.
