- In Vaastu Shastra, there are four cardinal directions namely, North, East, South and West and four corners such as North-East (Ishaan), South-East (Aagneya), South-West (Nairitya) and North-West (Vaayavya). The central area is called Brahmasthan.
- Exact North can be ascertained by using magnetic Compass and then other directions can be found. Moving clockwise we find east and then South and lastly west.
- Alternatively we can identify these cardinal points or directions by way of using our daily experiences. We know that Sun rises in the East and sets in the west. While facing east direction we get north to be in our left hand and south in the right.
- Although all the directions and corners are equally important in Vaastu Shastra but in order of timing of the effects, any change in North-East corner give the quickest results followed by North-West then South-East and lastly South-West corner.
- The effects of change in any cardinal direction accordingly appear during the time falling between the two respective corners.
- Each corner has the combined effects of two adjoining directions therefore any corner is more important and effective than the respective direction.
- Center
Center as the name itself suggests is a place which is located in the intersection of the lines diagonally joining four corners of a plot. It is the place of Lord Brahma, the god of creation. This place is assigned to the element Ether or Space which signifies expansion. This place is very crucial in Vaastu Shastra as it signifies the stomach area of Vaastu Purush and any heavy object or defective constructions can bring havoc for the entire family. This place should always be kept clean and free from any heavy object. Any defect in this direction is not the only reason for the inauspicious results rather it is the cumulative effects of other defects as well. However there are few serious defects of this direction which are more prominent if other Vaastu principles are adhered to.
These defects are not the only defects related to this corner but these are few indicators of defective central area. However some defects of serious nature with respect to the Brahmasthan are explained below.
- Any pillar situated in the center of the house is bound to create problems for the owner.
- Toilet in the center of the house is bad for the health of the master.
- There should not be any beam on the ceiling above the central area as it brings unnecessary tension for the owner.
- Kitchen is another defective construction in this region.
- Any bore well is bound to cause serious health problems for the residents.
- Therefore this region should be clean and free from any garbage or deposit of broken articles of the house. In ancient period this area was used for worshipping auspicious plant Tulsi.

North-East
North-East corner, also known as Ishaan Kon has been the most important direction or corner according to the ancient Vastu Shastra. According to mythology, this corner is the place for Lord Shiva. Planet Jupiter also known as Dev Guru is the ruler of this corner and Water element is the place assigned to this corner. Therefore, if maintained properly it gives all round success, name, fame, progeny, wealth and prestige to the native. This is so, because this corner is said to bestow upon the occupants all the benevolent effects of Jupiter. Jupiter is the representative of knowledge, wisdom, name and fame and hence good fortune. It is the only corner whose extension is beneficial in Vaastu Shastra. This corner is best suitable for Puja room, study room, underground water tank, bore well, aquarium etc. and other structures located here in a house can be considered as defects of this corner and suitable corrective or remedial measures should be undertaken to remove those defects.

Defective north-East corner has the corresponding malefic combination of planets in the natal horoscope of the owner in his second and third houses or the wrong placements of the respective planets. Any defect in this corner is not the only reason for the inauspicious results rather it is the cumulative effects of other defects as well. However there are few serious defects of this corner which are primary defects if other Vaastu principles are adhered to. Moreover these defects are not the only defects related to this corner but these are few indicators of defective North-East.
North East direction of any structure should not be truncated. It amounts to the absence of Jupiter effect.
- North East direction should also not be the highest area of the house or land and occupied by the heavy objects such as concrete structure, rock garden etc.
- North-East direction of the structure should not have the staircase or layered structures. Having stairs in this direction is the most inauspicious thing for any structure. This is like an inauspicious combination of Rahu and Jupiter causing serious problems for the family and especially the first child of the family.
- Kitchen in the North-East direction of a house is another inauspicious placement. Kitchen signifies the fire element and the ancient Vastu Shastra says that water occupies the North East direction, thus the interaction of fire with water results in the evaporation of water meaning thereby total loss of accumulated wealth.
- Toilet in the North-East region of the house is another inauspicious position. Toilets represent dead aura or negative aura emitting structure. This may lead to different types of addictions to the members of a family.
- Septic tank in the North-East corner of the house will have detrimental effects for the job of the first progeny howsoever brilliant and educated he will be.

South-East
While the North-East corner is the reservoir of natural energy, the South East corner also known as Aagnyeya kon is the reservoir of alternative energy. This corner is said to be the area assigned to Demon Guru Shukracharya and hence the planet Venus. According to the energy distribution of spectrum, this corner is the area of shorter frequency electromagnetic radiations in the form of Red color and infra Red. The Red and infra Red radiations have the effect of higher temperature that is why this corner is relatively hotter.
Since the activities related to this corner are predominantly of hot nature therefore all the heating gadgets like stoves, burners, heaters, microwave ovens geysers etc have to be placed in this corner. Similarly the electricity meter should also preferably be located in this corner. Even the electricity connection in a house is also advised from this corner of the electric pole. In factories this corner is most suitable for furnace and boilers. Defective South-East Corner
This corner is represented by planet Venus, and any conjunction of Venus with other enemy planets has the similar inauspicious effect as being suggested in various astrological texts. . Any defect in this corner is not the only reason for the inauspicious results rather it is the cumulative effects of other defects as well. However there are few serious defects of this corner which are primary defects if other Vaastu principles are adhered to. Moreover these defects are not the only defects related to this corner but these are few indicators of defective South-East;
Defective South-East corner has the corresponding malefic combination of planets in the natal horoscope of the owner in his eleventh and twelfth houses or the wrong placements of the respective planets.
- Extension of this corner in a house, office or the factory results in frequent litigations, labor disputes in a factory as well as problems faced from the Government sides,
- The truncated South-East corner can be responsible for ill health of the females of the house.
- Road hitting effects have also differing effects with regard to this corner. The road hitting effect is not auspicious if a road ends in the Eastern wall of the house, office or the factory .

South-West
This corner also known as Nairitya kon is responsible for the up gradation in career and the societal status for an individual. This corner is assigned to the demon and the element Earth is the dominant element in this corner.
Bedroom is the preferred placement for this corner. The staircase can also be constructed in this corner. Boundary walls and even the roof top should be the highest in this corner. This place is also suitable for keeping overhead water tank. North-West
North-West corner also known as Vaayavya kon is ruled by planet Moon and Air element. According to mythology, this corner is owned by Lord Kuber, God of wealth. Because of the fast moving planet Moon, it is also a corner signifying mind and mother. This corner is also responsible for well wishers, good neighbors and friends. Air element signifies circulation. Any restriction on the circulation of air in this corner adversely affects the social recognition and the mental health of the occupants, mother and the third child of the family.
This corner is best suited for the guest room in a house where the guests do not overstay and do not cause financial burden for the family. Septic tank can also be located in this corner without touching the walls of the house and the boundary walls. In case of factory the area is most suitable for keeping finished goods for their speedy disposal and thereby earning more profits. Other things located here can be considered as defects of this corner and suitable corrective or remedial measures should be undertaken to remove those defects.
However malefic combination of Moon with shadow planets Rahu brings inauspicious results and Defective North-West corner has the corresponding malefic combination of planets in the natal horoscope of the owner in his fifth and sixth houses or the wrong placements of the respective planets. Any defect in this corner is not the only reason for the inauspicious results rather it is the cumulative effects of other defects as well. However there are few serious defects of this corner which are primary defects if other Vaastu principles are adhered to. These defects are not the only defects related to this corner but these are few indicators of defective North-West.
Few defects of this corner can be summarized below.
- Staircase in this corner is a very inauspicious placement as this will cause serious financial hardships along with the mental stress for the mother. In some cases third child of the family can be physically or mentally retarded due to the stairs located in North-West.
- Kitchen is another defect for this corner. Frequent visits of guests will seriously affect the budgetary expenditures resulting in the high blood pressure for the females.
- Toilets in North-West can severely affect the digestive system of the occupants and they will suffer from gastric problems. The effects will be more if the toilet is under the stairs in this corner, as the surgeries of the lower limb can also be possible. This will also bring money through unfair means because of the effects of shadow planet Rahu.
- Extension of this corner in a house is another defect. It will bring disputes with the neighbors and even the well wishers and friends will behave like staunch enemies.
Remedies:
These defects can be significantly minimized or mitigated with the proper use of copper wires, mirrors, crystal balls, wind chimes, colors, plantations and some structural changes under the supervision of any Vaastu expert. For example, if the kitchen can’t be shifted from here then the walls of the kitchen should be painted in light blue color and the kitchen slab should be strictly in light color such as white, off white or light yellow otherwise domestic quarrel will be a routine matter for the family.
West
One of the most important cardinal directions for an individual is the West direction. It signifies social status and is ruled by the planet Saturn. The ruling deity of this direction is Varun which is also the rain God. This direction is the sink direction for Jaivik energy and it the direction where Sun sets. Any Vaastu compliant construction related to West is bound to give unprecedented prestige for the occupants whereas the defective West direction is certainly capable enough to result in sudden fall in prestige. In essence this direction must be taken care of carefully for the social prestige. However any defect in this direction can also result in the bad health of the male members of the family.

These defects need to be removed immediately.
Weak walls in the West directions cause ill health for the male members of the family.
Any structure of the house connected to the Western wall will seriously hamper the growth of the house owner in all respects.
Water body in the West direction will delay the results apart from the illness of the occupants.
More open space in West as compared to East direction is not good as the ownership of the house will be transferred to someone else due to compulsive reasons.
- Extension in West is very fatal defectin terms of the overall health and wealth of the family and it shpold never be done even if someone gives it free of cost.
Remedy:
Remedial measures for removing defects of this direction can be taken with the effective use of plantations, copper wires, crystals, pyramids and some necessary structural changes in the house. Even the placement of mirrors in certain ways can also be used for warding off the defects of this direction.
