Stairs and lifts:
Stairs, ladders or lift play an important role in life by elevating someone on the next level from his present level. Stairs in Vaastu Shastra represent Rahu and hence the placement of stairs in a house has an important role in terms of physical, financial or mental wellbeing of the family members .The ideal place for staircase in the house is South West. Rahu is the owner of that corner where the stairs get its positional advantage. In addition to South West corner, stairs can also be built either in West or South direction because of the friendly relationship of Rahu with Saturn and Mars respectively. Stairs other than this prescribed zone can be inauspicious for the inhabitants depending upon its direction or corner of placement.
However, while constructing a house or any building even if we keep the stairs in South-West direction of the building, few more precautions should be taken in order to remove other defects caused by the stairs. These are;
The stairs should be constructed in the clockwise direction;
The step count in the stairs should be odd numbered such as 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 and likewise
BUT while dividing the total number by 3, remaining balance should be 2 such as; 5, 11, 17, 23,….71 and so on.
So the preferred number for the stairs in a house is 5, 17, 23, 29…65 and 71 and so on;
Opening on the next floor should either be in North or East and slope of the roof should also be in North or East only. Slope should never be in South or West direction as this will eliminate several beneficial effects of South-West stairs.
- Stairs in the middle of the house i.e. Brahmasthan can be fatal for the house owner and it should be avoided at any cost. North East location of stairs can cause financial hardships for the family; it can adversely affect the physical or mental growth of the first child the first child of the native. In addition to domestic quarrels, it can bring ill repute to the house owner. Obstacles and hurdles in every walk of life can be felt due to North East location of stairs in the house.
- Stairs in the East direction unless rectified can cause the educational impediments and financial loss to the progeny and the obstacle in getting name and fame in the workplace.
- Stairs in South-East corresponds to the malefic combination of Rahu, Mars and Venus, resulting in the ill health of females of the family. Miseries can be aggravated if there is a bore well under the stairs or there is an overhead water tank. While the presence of a bore well under the stairs can cause surgical operations for the females, the overhead water tank can invite litigations in the workplace which can result in the imprisonment on flimsy grounds. This corner is also responsible for the second child of the native. More specifically stairs in this corner can adversely affect the physical or mental growth of the second child.
- Stairs in North direction has direct effect on the health of elderly females of the family. Since this direction is ruled by Mercury, and it has less animosity with Rahu hence apart from some financial problems and health problems of the females, there are no serious problems associated with the stairs in North.
- Stairs in North-West has more serious implications as compared to North placement of stairs. Since this corner is ruled by Moon and stairs represent Rahu, this makes another inauspicious planetary combination i.e. Grahan Yoga, which means affliction of Moon with Rahu. Moon controls the mind and association with Rahu means mental disorders for the members represented by this corner. Third child and mother of the family are likely to be the worst sufferers in terms of mental peace and harmony. Income and social relationships are also adversely affected due to the position of staircases in North-West. Since this corner also represents our outside social relationships and neighborhood relationships, affliction of Rahu with Moon results in strained relationship and animosity with the neighbors. Even our well wishers can be of no use in our needs and crisis for whatever reason due to this location of stairs. So we should be very particular about applying the remedial measures with regard to removal of this defect.
In astrological parlance, Rahu in its exalted position in the natal chart of a native can be indicated by the presence of staircases in the South West of his house. But an inauspicious planetary combination called Guru Chandal Yog is formed when the stairs (rahu) are located in North East corner (representing Jupiter), similarly Puja room (representing Jupiter), if situated in South West corner, again forms the same planetary combination. On several occasions during my Vaastu visits, this inauspicious combination has been found to be the main reason for multiple problems faced by the native. Living in a house with rightfully situated stairs, one can reap the maximum benefits during the period in his Vimshottari Dasha whenever the period of Rahu intervenes or during the period whenever Rahu transits through his 3rd, 6th or 11th house of lunar rashi of his birth chart.
But in practice, it is not always possible to have Stairs in the South-West corner of the house. The bad effects caused by such wrong placement of stairs can be considerably reduced by some simple and practical rectifications like putting high power lights inside the staircase thereby diminishing the bad effects of Rahu. Making the staircase more and more airy can also be a beneficial solution for this defect.
